Governor Deal Signs Law Allowing Golf Carts on City Streets

Governor Nathan Deal signed state-wide legislation, to allow people to drive specialized golf carts on public roads.

The new law will go into effect January 1st, 2012. Golf carts will only be allowed on streets where the speed limit is 35 miles per hour or less; and only the carts which cannot exceed 20 miles per hour will be allowed on the roads.

Frank Baker of Frank’s Golf Carts in Warner Robins, says the new bill is a step forward for the state, because carts are gas-savers.

“They’re economical vehicles, and it can be a real asset to the individuals to go to the store, and do their shopping even,” he says.

The bill is for both gas and electric carts, and would require specific modifications to make them safe enough to drive on a street.

Some of the modifications include;

• Seatbelts
• Headlights and Tail Lights
• A reverse warning system
• A windshield
• Rearview and side mirrors

Despite being a signed bill by the governor, local jurisdictions will be allowed to veto the bill if they choose.
