Mile Branch Park Gets Makeover, Residents Celebrate with a Party

It’s been four long years in the waiting, to bring the park back to its original beauty and prestige. Even Congressman Austin Scott stopped by the park today, to help celebrate the hard work put in to the park.

Hundreds of Pulaski County volunteers have spent countless hours in the park, cleaning, building, and restoring the 19 acres of land, to make it once again usable.

The park now has a bath house, with hot water showers and flushing toilets. There is a playground for the kids, and the pavilions have been restored and furnished with picnic tables. There is also a trail for walking, nearly 1.5 miles long through the park.

“The government doesn’t accomplish anything,” Scott explains. “It’s up to the citizens to accomplish it. What you got here is a group of citizens that came together…doing what they can to make things happen.”

The volunteers have also cleaned out part of the Ocmulgee River which flows through the park. Since they began cleaning it, they have pulled out nearly two tons of trash.

Pulaski County Middle School seventh graders were also at the celebration today. They helped renovate the park by making bird brochures, and planted a couple of trees. Sylandi Brown says, walking the river trial is a great place to learn.

“You can walk the trail, which has a ton of different trees, over 20. And also with the bird brochures, you can spot birds,” Brown explains.

Phase II of the clean up project, is slated to being in October, where volunteers will clean out another six acres of land. Once complete, the park will have 25 acres of usable land for recreation.
