MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – L. H. Williams Elementary, located in the Pleasant Hill community, has partnered with Community Schools United to launch a Walking School Bus program, which aims to help students get to school safely.
Attendance has been a major concern for years, especially after the COVID-19 pandemic, which resulted learning loss.
Community Schools United Coordinator, Emma Steinhaus, noticed a trend of younger students being absent from school. The Walking School Bus program is an effort to get more kids to school and help with safety concerns during morning travel.
Under the supervision of a route leader, students meet up at different locations in the neighborhood and walk to school together. The Walking School Bus program will take place on five critical attendance weekdays this spring, which were determined in collaboration with the school.
“We appreciate the work of Community School and the Walking School Bus initiative,” Principal of L.H. Williams Dr. Cynthia Jones said. “The Walking School Bus provides support to ensure our students attend school daily. As a result of volunteers, our students can now enjoy a safer route to school, enhancing their daily journey and fostering a secure learning environment. We applaud the positive impact this initiative has on the well-being of our students.”
Students who wish to participate in the Walking School Bus program need to register and sign up in advance at the school, although walk-ins are also welcome.
The next Walking School Bus will be on February 16. Volunteers are needed. You must be at least 18 years old and pass a background check to volunteer.
