Macon commemorates Dr. King’s legacy with wreath-laying ceremony at Rosa Parks Square
Elaine Lucas led the annual tribute to civil rights icons and invited Maconites to engage in year-round activities honoring Dr. King.

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – With Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day less than two weeks away, the Macon community is coming together to honor the legacy of Dr. King and all the civil rights leaders of the past and present.
The Martin Luther King Jr. Commission and other partner organizations held an annual wreath laying ceremony Thursday at Rosa Parks Square in Macon.
The event was open to the public.
“Each year we start this off by laying a wreath here in honor of not only Rosa Parks, but also Dr. King, so that we can remind citizens that this is still important, it’s still relevant,” Elaine Lucas, the chair of the Martin Luther King Jr. Board, said. “They still need to be involved, and there’s still a need to fight for your rights.”
All of the activities that celebrate Dr. King all year round can be found on the Macon-Bibb website at maconbibb.us/mlk.
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day is Monday, January 15.
