MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) — It’s the second day of Macon Burger Week, and we’re continuing our coverage at a new establishment called Sophia’s on Second.

It opened in July and the staff is excited about participating in their first burger week. For their entry, Sophia’s is offering the “Mississippi Blues” burger, which has marinated braised beef in a Mississippi au jus, topped with Swiss cheese, fried onions and pepperoncini on top of a toasted bun with a savory garlic mash potato spread.

“It’s just one of those Southerner things that just brings a warmth to your heart, especially with it being fall time,” kitchen manager Jasmine Gregg said. “It’s one of those–it’s a comfort food basically, and you get the burger while you’re at it.”

41NBC’s Draze Rozelle says he wasn’t quite sure what Mississippi au jus was, but Gregg explained it’s a type of gravy that gives meat a sort of pot roast flavor.

“So when I took a bite, I immediately tasted the mashed potatoes,” Rozell said. “Still, it was quickly followed up with something even better. It reminded me a lot of like when my mom would put beef in a crockpot with various vegetables and some broth and let that simmer for God knows how long, but it was very good. I tasted mostly that over the actual burger itself, which is great! I can’t complain. It’s a phenomenal flavor.”

If you were looking for something that evokes that taste of home kind of feeling, Sophia’s on Second is definitely the place to go to. As the name suggests, it’s located on Second Street in downtown Macon and is within easy walking distance from a few other competitors.
