Former Acting DA for Macon Circuit Dies
Former Bibb County Acting District Attorney Wayne Tillis died this weekend.
He was visiting his mother in Florida when he had a fatal heart attack.
Tillis had worked with the district attorney’s office· for more than 30 years.
Current District Attorney Greg Winters remembered him as a smart, ethical lawyer, who was also a mentor and good friend. Winters said, “He will be truly missed and our hearts go out to his family at this time.”
Winters provided the following biographical information about Tillis:
After being honorably discharged from the United States Navy, Tillis enrolled in the Walter F. George School of Law at Mercer University. He graduated and was admitted to the Georgia Bar on June 9, 1978. He honorably served the citizens of the Macon Judicial Circuit for over 30 years. He was an Assistant District Attorney from 1979 to 2007. He became the Chief Assistant District Attorney in January 2008 and served in that capacity until becoming the interim District Attorney on June 28, 2010, following the resignation of Howard Simms.
