MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – A 17-year-old student bonded out of jail after high school campus police found a loaded handgun at school. Police confiscated a nine-millimeter during random search at Howard High School.
New safety procedures for the Bibb County School District is to make sure safety and security on all campuses. Bibb County School District’s Chief of Staff Keith Simmons says, there’s a surreal feeling discovering a loaded gun on campus.
“That’s the purpose and the objective of the search is to ensure that there aren’t any prohibited items or contraband found on our campuses,” he said.
The random searches will keep students on their toes.
“They’re not expecting it. If they don’t know it’s coming, then you’re more likely to find something they shouldn’t have or shouldn’t be doing,” Claudell Price, a parent, said.
Simmons says by finding the gun, it setting the tone for students letting them know safety is being taken serious.
“It’s not just a matter of trying to create an environment where punitive actions are being taken. We’re also trying to create an environment where there are deterrents and deterrent actions being made taken. Obviously, student safety and security is the utmost priority in the district,” Simmons said.
During searches, police use metal detection wands. Simmons says K9 dogs are also utilized for random and planned searches. They help sniff out: gun powder, opioids or prescription medications, alcohol or drugs.
Price says security measures like these are needed.
“We have to protect the kids from themselves,” Price said.
Simmons is encouraging teachers to continue having conversations with their students and reiterate that certain items are not allowed at school.
