Macon-Bibb EMA preparing for evacuees as Florence gets closer

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Macon-Bibb EMA is preparing for a potential influx of evacuees as Florence gets closer to landfall.

Director Spencer Hawkins says even though the county isn’t in any danger, they’re preparing plans for shelters opening up to accommodate visitors.

“We saw this with Matthew two years ago and we saw it last year with Irma–people do evacuate. We need to be ready to help them out and make sure that they’re staying safe,” said Hawkins.

Hawkins says with potential for some severe weather here, it’s also important for residents to have a plan.

That means having an emergency kit ready, non-perishable food items available and using MBC Alerts for the latest information.
