2 U.S. Soldiers Stop in Macon as Part of Cross-Country Tour to Raise Awareness of Cancer

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Two military combat veterans are traveling across the United States to raise awareness for cancer, and they’re doing it all on foot.

Wayne Whitbeck and James Allred started their journey called “Ruck For A Cure” in South Carolina earlier this month, and they’ve traveled more than 300 miles so far.

The duo walked through Macon today and says tonight, they’ll be staying in a hotel for a change.  They tell us they usually camp out for the night.

Their goal is to walk 15 miles every day, but the recent heavy rains we’ve had here in middle Georgia haven’t made it easy on them.

“There’s a lot of times where the weather really makes us want to stop,” says Allred.  “At least take a break for a little bit and let it pass, but more times than not, we keep it going–keep pushing through.”

The pair’s next stop? Columbus.  They say it’ll probably take them about a week to get there, and they hope to finish their cross-country route by the end of the summer.
