UPDATE (7/6/2026): An 18-year-old has been arrested in connection with a fatal traffic crash that happened last month on Bethel Church Road, according to the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office.

The sheriff’s office said Amari Cheeley turned himself in at the Bibb County Law Enforcement Center on Monday at 5:51 a.m. on warrants stemming from the June 4 crash.

Cheeley is charged with vehicular homicide, causing serious injury by vehicle and disregard for a stop sign.

The crash happened June 4 on Bethel Church Road. Deputies have not released additional information about the circumstances of the wreck.

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) — The Bibb County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a fatal traffic crash that happened Thursday night at the intersection of Bethel Church Road and Knoxville Road.

According to the sheriff’s office, the crash was reported just before 10 p.m. Investigators say a Nissan Altima was traveling south on Knoxville Road when an Audi SUV traveling east on Bethel Church Road entered the intersection and collided with the Nissan.

A passenger in the Nissan, identified as 52-year-old Tony Gales, was taken to a local hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

No other injuries were reported.

The Bibb County Sheriff’s Office says Gales’ next of kin has been notified.

The crash remains under investigation.
