1,300 free weather radios distributed to Macon-Bibb residents to boost severe weather preparedness
The Macon-Bibb County Emergency Management Agency handed out 1,300 free NOAA weather radios Tuesday as part of its ongoing effort to help residents stay prepared during severe weather.

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The distribution event was held at the Macon Mall, where residents lined up to receive the life-saving devices. Officials say the radios provide direct alerts from the National Weather Service — even when power outages or cell service disruptions occur.
“We’re so excited that so many people are here to get these weather radios and we continue to do this,” said EMA Director Spencer Hawkins. “Preparedness and early warning and being informed about dangerous weather is so very critical as we all know the weather here in Central Georgia can change very quickly.”
In addition to the 1,300 radios, EMA also distributed 130 pillow shakers and strobe lights designed to alert residents who are deaf or hard of hearing during severe weather events. The agency partnered with Disability Connections to ensure those specialized devices reached the people who need them most.
To receive a radio, residents were required to show a valid Macon-Bibb County ID and complete a brief survey.
Over the past several years, EMA has distributed more than 4,000 weather radios throughout the community, helping families stay informed during tornadoes, severe thunderstorms, and other emergencies.
Emergency officials encourage residents to sign up for MBCAlert for additional emergency notifications and to follow local media and trusted weather sources to stay informed before, during, and after severe weather events.
