MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Last month, more than sixty participants spent the night outdoors in the 12th Annual Daybreak Sleepout, an event dedicated to raising awareness and support for the homeless community.

On Monday, Sister Deborah Mallott, director of DePaul USA Daybreak, along with keyboardist and musical director Chuck Leavell, revealed the results of this year’s sleepout.

The event raised a total of $329,685, showing the community’s commitment and support.

“We’re going to make a difference. We’re going to get people off the street. We will empower them to lead healthier and happier lives. And we can do it together. Macon, you’re amazing. Thank you,” said Sister Mallott.

While this year’s total fell slightly short of the $334,986 raised last year, Sister Mallott emphasized that the funds raised are crucial to the organization’s mission.

Rolling Stone and Allman Brothers Band keyboardist Chuck Leavell emphasized why he stays involved with Daybreak.

“Daybreak is such an amazing organization. It’s not just about a hot meal or a shower. It’s about trying to find a skill, trying to get a job and get off the streets permanently,” he said.

The funds raised will play an important role in the everyday operations of Daybreak, assisting in crucial services such as housing assistance, job placement, and providing essential amenities like showers and utilities.

“This money will help fund our daily operations, it’s the everyday things that we do here at Daybreak that that money will help to fund. And we couldn’t do this without you.” Sister Mallott added.
