11 High School Seniors Choose Colleges at Academic Signing Day

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – We’ve all heard about national signing day–it’s when athletes from all across the country pick which school they’ll be attending to play football or some other sport.

Wednesday night, a local fraternity chapter held the first annual signing day for students who are going to college on academic scholarships.  The Macon-Warner Robins chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity put on the first annual “Kappa League Signing Day” at Southwest High School.

Eleven high school seniors from Macon, Warner Robins and Milledgeville announced where they’ll be going to school for the next four years–and yes, there were hats involved, just like on football signing day.

The guys who were honored are a part of the Kappa League program.  The fraternity partners with the group to do community service projects all over middle Georgia.

We spoke with a few of them, and they say they owe a lot to the program and can’t wait to get to college.

“For me to share the moment with them, for us to actually be here for signing day–not showcasing our athletic abilities but our academic minds–it means a lot to me just being with them,” says Jaimeson Taylor, valedictorian at Southwest High School in Macon.  He’ll be heading to Mercer in the fall.

“I suggest any young male that is interested in (Kappa League) to join,” says Vidual Futch, a senior at Hutchings Career Center who plans to go to Stillman College in Alabama.  “It develops a lot of characteristics and things of that nature.”

The Kappa League has at least one member from every public high school in Macon, and there are 70 members in all throughout middle Georgia.  Ninety percent of the students who join the program go on to college.
