Oglethorpe police investigating deadly pit bull attack

Police say the victim was attacked while walking along Chatham Street on Saturday.

OGLETHORPE, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – A man died after being attacked by three pit bull dogs while walking along Chatham Street in Oglethorpe, according to the Oglethorpe Police Department.

Police say officers received a report from the Macon County Sheriff’s Office on Saturday about a potential dog bite incident involving a victim who was being taken to the hospital. Investigators later determined that Raphael Woolfork was attacked by the dogs while walking in the area.

Authorities say a nearby citizen came to Woolfork’s aid and took him to another location where Emergency Medical Services could reach him. During treatment, Woolfork went into cardiac arrest and was taken to the hospital, where he later died.

The Oglethorpe Police Department said it is actively investigating and will release additional information as it becomes available.

“In light of this tragic event, the Oglethorpe Police Department stresses the importance of public safety and urges residents to exercise caution around stray animals,” the department said in a news release.

The City of Oglethorpe also extended condolences to Woolfork’s family and friends.
