MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Hundreds of homeless men and women will have a hot meal this Thanksgiving thanks to a woman who was once homeless.
Sirleaner Usry says, “It was hard. The struggle was really, really hard.”
Sirleaner Usry is a mother, a wife and now a blessing to the homeless. She once was in their shoes but now she’s using her blessings to share with others.
Usry explains, ”In the year of 2014 me and my family was homeless and we stayed at the Salvation Army. It was days like on the weekend, we was walking and didn’t really have nowhere to go.”
While praying for better days, one day god answered her prayers.
Usry says, “My husband he was just out looking for work. He did end up getting a job and when he got a job we ended up getting assistance and we ended up getting help.”
When the family became stable in their own home, Usry kept her promise.
“I promised the lord, he got me out of this situation, I promise I would give back,” Usry adds.
She did just that with the help of what she calls an angel in disguise.
“I met her at loaves and fishes. I actually went to ask about community service and to just to get help with my drive I do for myself for the homeless every year. They put me off to her and we just kicked off and we been doing things every since,” says Anecia Wooden who is a friend of Sirleaner.
The pair are putting together care packages and Thanksgiving meals for the homeless. From turkeys, hens, green beans, rice, rolls, toiletry items, socks and more, the spirit of giving is in the air just in time for the holidays.
The women are call themselves “shining stars.” They’re inviting the homeless to come down to Central City park on Sunday at noon for the feast.
