MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – A man wanted for stealing a car and taking police on a chase around town was arrested Tuesday.

Around 4:00 in the morning, Bibb County police said Jarvis Ottman stole a 2002 Mazda Tribute, when the owner of the car was getting money from the SunTrust Bank ATM in downtown Macon.

Lieutenant Randy Gonzalez said the owner left the car running, so the suspect stole it.

A police officer later noticed the stolen car near Emery Highway.

“He turned around got behind the vehicle. At some point he initiated or attempted to initiate a traffic stop on the vehicle and stop the vehicle by turning on his lights and sirens,” Gonzalez said.

But, Ottman refused to pull over and instead took police on a chase.

Gonzalez said the suspect eventually crashed into three parked cars near Walnut Street, hopped out of the car, and then ran away, but he left something behind.

“There was a passenger in the vehicle, who was still there at the vehicle at the time which deputies detained for a short period of time, until they could figure out what was going on,” he said.

Gonzalez said police eventually released the passenger because it appeared that he didn’t have anything to do with Ottman stealing the car.

Police caught Ottman near Bond and Orange Street.

Gonzalez said it’s important to lock your car doors when you get out.

“You know, whether you’re running in to go into a store, an ATM machine, whatever you may be doing, shut the car off, take your keys out, and lock it up.”

Ottman was charged with theft by receiving stolen property, fleeing or attempting to elude a law enforcement officer, aggressive driving, and criminal damage to property.

Police are still investigating this incident. If you have any information call the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office at 478-751-7500 or the Macon Regional Crime Stoppers at 1-87-CRIME.
