MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Kevin McCauley is a big fan of the taxi-like car service called Uber.
“To me, it seems like a no-brainer,” said McCauley.
The Macon native is trying to get the company to bring its services to the Middle Georgia area. Uber uses a smart phone app to connect drivers with people looking for a ride.
“If you sign up now in Macon, you’ll look for drivers in Macon and you won’t see any. Occasionally, later at night or early in the morning, you’ll find Uber drivers on the north side of Macon and what’s happening is, they’re coming back from driving in Atlanta,” explained McCauley.
McCauley started a Facebook page and Twitter account called “Macon Needs Uber.”
“Basically to get it here, people need to sign up to drive and sign up to ride,” said McCauley.
After living in Nashville, McCauley was shocked to move back home and learn Uber wasn’t available in the area.
“If you add up the populations of Warner Robins, Byron, Perry, all the surrounding areas, include Macon in that, we’ve got more than enough population to sustain it. It’s really strange that it’s not here because it’s in towns with smaller populations,” said McCauley.
He believes Macon’s downtown nightlife is one reason Uber needs to come to Middle Georgia.
“3, 4, 5 bucks to get home safely [and] not have to worry about parking. People come down here on a Saturday night and they circle blocks and blocks looking for a place to park. If you got an Uber, you’d just get dropped off at the curb,” explained McCauley.
He added, the service wouldn’t just help out people looking for rides, since Uber employs drivers who use their own cars.
“It will bring employment opportunities to people here in Macon,” said McCauley.
The Macon Needs Uber Facebook page has more than 500 likes. The Twitter account has 80 followers.
