WARNER ROBINS, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – A Northside High School teacher involved in a fight with a student in December announced he’s resigning from his teaching position.

Coach Dan Kelly sent a letter to the Houston County Board of Education saying although he’s stepping down, his actions were "reactive and were provoked by the student."

The student, Logan Hancock, is waiting to be enrolled in alternative school according to his family.

Kelly was scheduled to meet with the school board this month for a hearing on what he and the school will do moving forward. He announced he didn’t want to continue with this process and rather resign.

Kelly’s full letter reads:

After much consideration, I have decided to resign from my position at Northside High School. I feel that it is important to note that, with regard to the incident that preceded my decision to resign, my actions were entirely reactive and were provoked by the student.

I recognize the expectations and high standards a teacher is held to in Houston County and at Northside High School thereby prompting my decision to resign. I have considered the faculty and students at Northside my family over the last 23 1/2 years and do not want to do or say anything that would negatively impact the school or the School District.

I have so many fond memories of my years at Northside and the wonderful students I have had the opportunity of mentoring over the years. I love my chosen profession and will continue my career in another school district. I have been overwhelmed by the outpouring of support I have received from students, current and former faculty members, friends and members of the community and will forever be blessed by that. I want to express my tremendous appreciation to all of you. Thank you so much!
