Daybreak Weather Trivia Question: Thursday February 9, 2012

During which season are lightning deaths most common?

a.) Spring

b.) Summer

c.) Fall

The correct answer is b.) Summer.

According to the National Weather Service, from 1995 to 2010, lightning caused 26 deaths in the state of Georgia. Most of those occur during the Summer, and typically in the afternoon and evening.

I know it sounds cliche, but "when thunder roars, go indoors!" If you can hear thunder, you can be struck by lightning.

If you're outside when you hear thunder, you should find either a sturdy building or a hard-top vehicle, and wait at least 30 minutes before venturing back outside.

If you're indoors during a thunderstorm, do not use phones or other electrical appliances. You should also avoid bathing or showering.

If you're boating during a storm, you should get to land immediately.

Tomorrow we'll conclude Georgia Severe Weather Awareness Week by talking about Flood Safety!
