Bibb Commissioners Vote Against Tax Increase

Bibb County Commissioners voted not to raise property taxes Tuesday night.

At their third and final public hearing on a proposed tax increase, several homeowners thanked Commissioners for choosing to make $1.7 million in cuts, to avoid raising taxes.

Commissioners voted unanimously to roll the millage rate back to revenue-neutral, meaning most Bibb property owners will not see an increase in taxes from the County.

Macon City Councilman Erick Erickson Joins CNN

Macon City Council member Erick Erickson has signed a contract to be a political analyst for CNN.  Erickson will lend his conservative opinion five nights a week on the international news network.

Erickson has made guest appearances on CNN and other national networks since December, but this is an official contract guaranteeing him airtime through the presidential election in 2012.

GA Firefighters Battle Rail Car Blaze

Glynn County firefighters battled a fire on a train trestle after at least two rail cars carrying Mercedes-Benz vehicles caught fire.

The two rail cars, which caught fire Monday afternoon, were carrying the vehicles from the Mercedes plant in Vance, Ala., for
shipment to dealers. The train cars belong to Norfolk Southern.

No injuries were reported in the blaze. It was not immediately known how badly the trestle was damaged.

Savannah Officer Kills Suspect Who Stabbed Him

Savannah police say an officer has shot and killed a suspect who stabbed him with a knife.

Savannah-Chatham County police spokeswoman Gena Moore said the shooting happened Monday morning. Moore said the officer was chasing the on-foot suspect when the unidentified man pulled a knife and stabbed the officer. She said the officer then drew his handgun and shot the suspect, killing him.

Wells Fargo Stagecoach Makes Macon Debut

The famed Wells Fargo Stagecoach is making its debut to Macon during the Annual Cherry Blossom Festival Parade.  The bright red coach will make its first visit to Macon to celebrate the entrance of Wells Fargo Advisors to the Middle Georgia community.  The first Wells Fargo Stagecoach was built before the Civil War.

The Annual Cherry Blossom Parade is Sunday, March 21st in downtown Macon beginning at 3pm.

 

Woman Hit With Pothole Rock in Critical Condition

Authorities say a South Carolina woman is in critical condition after she was struck by a rock that flew through her windshield when a pickup truck hit a pothole along Interstate 20 near the Alabama-Georgia line.

Alabama State Troopers said in a news release that 33-year-old Jo Maureen Fisher was a passenger in a car driven by her husband Monday afternoon. The release said she was flown to UAB Hospital where she died.

However, UAB spokesman Troy Goodman said Fisher was in the hospital late Monday night, which Trooper Chad Joiner confirmed.

Consolidation Takes Center Stage At Public Forum

The topic of consolidating Macon and Bibb County into one governing body is gaining interest - both locally, and at the state capital.

Monday night, nearly 70 residents gathered at a public forum in Downtown Macon to discuss the issue.

New Millage Rate Coming for Macon Property Owners

Macon city council will decide on the new millage rate for property owners Tuesday. 

Mayor Robert Reichert proposed raising taxes for the first time in five years and rolling the rate back to 9.8 mills from the current rate of 10.16 mills.  That would mean that property owners will have to pay about $35 dollars more in taxes for a $100,000 home.

Officials say the tax hike will make up for $1.2 million of the city's 1.5 million dollar budget shortfall.

"Incredible Kid Day" Delivers Letters to Bibb Students

Hundreds of Bibb County students will get handwritten letters of encouragement from adults in the community.

County leaders participated in the annual "Absolutely Incredible Kid Day" Monday.  It's a letter-writing event to inspire kids in Bibb County to make and achieve goals in school.  About 600 letters will be delivered to third and fifth graders in Title-one schools in Macon.

The event's organizer, LaTanya Lester with Community Partnership said, "It is a remarkably low-cost community service project...one that's priceless in terms of what it does for motivating

Cherry Blossom Preps Begin

 

Pink is springing up across downtown Macon, as the city gets ready for this year's "Cherry Blossom Festival."


Cherry trees on Third Street haven't bloomed yet, but organizers are still busy, prepping for the Pinkest Party on Earth.


This year, the festival has a new leader.
