The 24th annual Dragon Con convention kicks off Friday and runs

through Monday.

Hoards of people dressed as comic book characters, science

fiction heroes and villains and other fantastical figures plan to

descend on Atlanta for the festivities.

Sandy Springs Lawyer Ordered To Pay The Family Of A Man Who Died In A Rome Nursing Facility

   A jury says a Sandy Springs lawyer and nursing

home operator should pay $43.5 million to the family of a man who

died at a Rome nursing facility.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that the verdict

against 62-year-old George D. Houser was handed down Friday in a

wrongful death lawsuit.

The payment is to go to the estate of Morris Ellison who was 80

when he died.

Ex-Cop Filing Lawsuit Against City of Dublin

An ex-cop says he's suing the city of Dublin after being fired earlier this year.

    

Former Sergeant Robert Hazley says he was wrongfully terminated from his job after two complaints were filed against him.     

    

Once fired, Hazley conducted his own investigation into the police department.

 

Hazley isn't allowed to comment on the lawsuit, but he says he has enough information to bring federal charges against the department that fired him.

Fire Leaves Family Homeless

An early morning house fire on Friday leaves a family homeless.Firefighters were able to put the fire out fast at the South Macon home, but not before it destroyed the family's home leaving the family of six displaced. 

Miriam Dean and her family moved into the house two weeks ago, and now there is nothing left, "We lost everything, everything, everything, but I just thank God we do have our life," says Dean.

Tariff Filed to Recoup Finance Cost by Georgia Power

Georgia Power has filed a tariff with the Public
Service Commission to recoup finance costs for two new nuclear
reactors through rate increases.

The Nuclear Construction Cost Recovery tariff was authorized by
the Georgia Legislature in 2009. The tariff was filed Friday and
would go into effect in January if the PSC votes to approve it.

Georgia Power says residential customers using about 1,000
kilowatt hours per month will see an average annual increase of
about 1.4 percent, or $1.74 a month, over the first five years of
the tariff.

Fugitive Arrested after Trade

Authorities arrested an Alabama fugitive
after they say he traded a gun for tickets to the NASCAR race at
Atlanta Motor Speedway.

Hampton police Officer Eric Hayes tells WSB-TV that vendors
alerted him on Wednesday to a man trying to sell a .22 caliber
pistol. Hayes says 51-year-old Michael Lynn Sherer managed to trade
the gun for two tickets to the race before the officer spotted him.

Authorities in Alabama say escaped from the Winston County jail,
where he was being held on a murder charge in the killing of
52-year-old Thomas Lynn Smith on Aug. 24.

Teen Indicted for Throwing Bleach Balloon

A Gwinnett County grand jury has
indicted a 17-year-old charged with throwing a bleach-filled
balloon at another teen.

Authorities say Juan Carlos Flores and three other boys targeted
14-year-old Miguel Mesa as he walked home from Lilburn Middle
School on the last day of school in May.

The balloon temporarily blinded Mesa, though the teens say they
only wanted to ruin his clothes.

Roethlisberger’s Sentence Reduced

Pittsburgh Steelers Quarterback, Ben Roethlisberger, will be back on the football field earlier than expected.

Today NFL officials reduced his suspension from six games to four.

The quarterback was suspended back in April, when he was accused of sexually assaulting a Georgia college student after a night of drinking at a Milledgeville bar.  However, Roethlisberger was never charged.

The quarterback will return to the field October 17.

 

Macon Police Recruit Accidentally Shot

Police in Macon say a recruit is in stable condition after accidentally shooting herself in the leg at the police firearms range.

Police spokeswoman Jami Gaudet says the recruit, Tomika Jackson, was struck in the right leg by a bullet Thursday morning when her gun fired while she was holstering the weapon.

The Telegraph newspaper reports that police say Jackson was admitted to The Medical Center of Central Georgia with what they describe as a non-life threatening injury. Police say the shooting is being reviewed under department policy.

Gunman Robs Bibb County X-mart

Bibb County investigators are looking for the man who robbed the X-mart adult store Thursday night.  It happened at at the location on Emory highway around 10:20 PM.

According to a news release, the suspect walked in, showed a gun, and demanded an employee open the cash register.  He then made the clerk go to the storage room.  No one was hurt, but the robber made a getaway.

Now the Sheriff's Office is looking for a dark-skinned black man, about five-feet-seven, with a medium build and an afro.  He was wearing a red baseball hat, white short sleeve shirt
