Young and Barker taken in 2014 MLB Draft

On the third and final day of the 2014 Major League Baseball Draft two Mercer baseball standouts, junior Chesny Young and recent graduate Brandon Barker, heard their names called on Saturday afternoon.
MACON, Ga. (MERCER ATHLETICS RELEASE) – On the third and final day of the 2014 Major League Baseball Draft two Mercer baseball standouts, junior Chesny Young and recent graduate Brandon Barker, heard their names called on Saturday afternoon.

Young, the Bears starting third baseman, was taken in the 14th round by the Chicago Cubs while Barker, Mercer’s Friday night starter, was selected in the 16th round by the Atlanta Braves.

Young becomes the highest Mercer player drafted since Jacob Tanis was taken in the 13th round of the 2011 MLB Draft while Barker becomes the highest Bears pitcher drafted since current MLB reliever Cory Gearrin was selected in the fourth round of the 2007 MLB Draft.

A former All-American and Atlantic Sun Conference Player of the Year, Young continued to show his ability as one of the best pure hitters in the league in 2014. Young led the team with a .348 batting average on the strength of 71 hits to go along with 32 runs scored, 10 doubles, 38 RBI and a .430 on-base percentage. The Atlanta, Ga. native stepped his game up during league play as he ranked tied for ninth amongst A-Sun players with a .398 batting average and 39 hits. Young also tied for the team lead with 20 multi-hit games this season while committing only six errors defensively at the hot corner.

Barker finished his career in Macon with another solid season as the ace of the Bears rotation. The Woodstock, Ga. native went 4-4 with a 3.84 ERA and 63 strikeouts in 68.0 innings pitched. A former All-Conference performer and A-Sun Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Year, Barker finished his career at Mercer with a 20-11 record, a 3.25 ERA and 250 strikeouts 278.2 innings pitched.
