Victim speaks out after gang members attack in Macon

One boy was the target of a gang street fight, and he believes it was because he's openly gay.
MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – A Macon mother says she is scared for her son’s life after he was the victim of a gang fight near her home.

Several teenagers in the Smash On Site (S.O.S) and West Side Gang Crips (W.S.G.C.) attacked her son Andrew Herron, and the family believes it’s because he is openly gay.

According to the Macon-Bibb County Sheriff’s Office, Herron was chased down by the group to the intersection of Plant Street and Felton Avenue in the Tindall Heights neighborhood.

Herron’s mother, Shameika Hill, witnessed the fight from inside her home, then came outside to defend her son.

"I don't know what else to do...I just don't. I'm confused. I'm at a lost. I just don't know what to do," Hill says.

She added she was in shock seeing her son being beat up, and everyday since the fight, she’s concerned for his well-being.

"It's hard as a mom, because I have to worry everyday. He leaves home, I have to worry about his safety," says Hill.

“I was not just going to sit there," says Herron.

He believes during the moment of the altercation he had to defend a purpose.

“This is not okay for you to be judged and jumped on, because everybody is different. Accept it."

The report also shows the group of young men were armed with knives, sticks and a brick.

Hill says she’s use to violence in the area, but she never had to defend one of her own before.

"I feel like we should have more protection, and there's a lot of people out here who have been targeted by these gangs, but they're afraid to fight back," says Hill.

Herron walked away with “minor scraps and abrasions” while his mother was injured from the bricks the teens threw at the family.

The mother blames the young gang members’ parents for letting their kids learn lessons from their surroundings rather than parents at home.

"We need to play a bigger part of these kids lives before we windup with incidents like these all the time."

Three juvenile suspects were arrested from the group and charged with obstruction and affray.
