Veterans Warhawks head into 2014 after school's first winning season

Bill Shanks talks with David Bruce, head coach of the Veterans Warhawks.
MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) - The Veterans Warhawks finished 8-4 in 2013, good enough for the school's first ever winning record. With their first game of 2014 set to start in less than two months, head coach David Bruce hopes his team can continue to progress.

"It gives you confidence," said Bruce about heading into the year after a winning season. "And confidence and momentum... people talk about them, but they're real."

Returning for the Warhawks is junior quarterback Logan Byrd, a player Coach Bruce feels has done an excellent job handling the rigors of the position as well as being a team leader. He says that Byrd, "... encapsulates what you want in a quarterback."

Defense was a huge part of the Warhawks' success in 2013.  They allowed only 16.3 points per game, with four of their opponents being held to less than ten points. Bruce says they've lost some players from the defense since last year but still have a few good ones coming back, like safety Rashaad Bolton and cornerback DJ Rozier.

Above all, Bruce says he likes the depth his squad has.

"We do got a little depth, and in high school, that's one of the hardest things to get."

Veterans' first game will be on the road against Houston County August 28 with their home opener being September 12 against Washington County.
