State Senate group to discuss school discipline

A Georgia state senate committee is hosting a hearing this week to discuss the findings of a study on school discipline strategies.

ATLANTA (AP) — A Georgia state senate committee is hosting a hearing this week to discuss the findings of a study on school discipline strategies.

Sen. Emanuel Jones, a Decatur Democrat, will lead the School Discipline Senate Study Committee's first hearing Thursday afternoon at the state Capitol building.

Jones is the committee chairman and launched the group to study the type of punishments local school boards impose on students, expulsion rates, disparities in discipline between students of different racial backgrounds and more.

The committee also includes Sens. Hardie Davis, an Augusta Democrat and Republicans Bill Heath of Bremen, Lindsey Tippins of Marietta and John Wilkinson of Toccoa.
