Police: Gordon man shot by girlfriend's father

Eric Turner told police his daughter's boyfriend, Roosevelt Coats, was yelling at her, and he thought Coats would hurt his daughter.

GORDON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) - A man was shot Thursday night on Papermill Road.

Gordon Police Chief Mike Hall says Roosevelt Coats was shot by his girlfriend's father, Eric Turner.

The incident happened around 9:30.  Turner told police he thought his daughter was being physically abused by Coats.

“Police had just left the house, Turner called us and said he could hear his daughter's boyfriend yelling at her,” said Hall.

Police have responded to the Papermill Home before on domestic abuse calls, said Hall.

Officers went to the home and confirmed there were no signs of physical abuse.

It turns out Coats was yelling at his daughter to get out of his room, and not the girlfriend,” added Hall. “In the meantime, Turner went over to the house and confronted Coats.”

Hall says the two men argued, then began fighting and that's when Turner shot Coats in the foot.

Turner was arrested and charged with aggravated assault.
