MACON, Ga. (MERCER ATHLETICS RELEASE) – Reigning Atlantic Sun Conference Player of the Year Trey Rule added another impressive distinction to his resume on Thursday as the Eatonton, Ga. native was named a Division I PING All-America Honorable Mention by the Golf Coaches Association of America.
Rule, who joined fellow teammates James Beale and Hans Reimers as PING All-East Region selections last month, became the first Mercer player in program history to earn All-American status. The award comes on the heels of Rule’s stellar junior campaign that saw him finish No. 61 in Golfweek’s Men’s Collegiate Individual Rankings after leading the Bears to their first conference title and NCAA Regional appearance in program history.
Rule posted a 71.25 scoring average while finishing inside the top-15 in nine of 12 events. His season included a pair of individual titles at the SunTrust Gator Invitational and the Atlantic Sun Championship and was capped by A-Sun Player of the Year and All-Conference first team honors.
In 36 competitive rounds, Rule shot in the 60’s on 10 occasions while leading Mercer with 121 birdies and four eagles. Adding to his two individual medalist performances were a tie for fourth at the AutoTrader.com Collegiate Classic, a tie for seventh at The Sam Hall Intercollegiate and a tie for ninth at the NCAA Raleigh Regional.
Rule was one of 30 players selected as Honorable Mention recipients behind the 10-member first, second and third team All-American squads.
