Mercer's Lamb says lots of battles happening in preseason camp

The Mercer University football team went through its second-straight practice in full pads on Monday morning at Mercer University Stadium.
MACON, Ga. (MERCER ATHLETICS RELEASE) – The Mercer University football team went through its second-straight practice in full pads on Monday morning at Mercer University Stadium.

The added intensity of live action continued on the sixth practice of camp, as the Bears wrapped up the two-and-a-half hour with a spirited red zone drill. Mercer head coach Bobby Lamb discussed his thoughts on practice, as the team transitions into the first two-a-day of the 2014 preseason on Tuesday.

Quotes from Head Coach Bobby Lamb

On his thoughts on Monday's practice:

“I thought it was a great morning, the sun came out and everyone had a little pep in their step. We got a lot of live work with a team pass period, an opener period, which is our first down period. We finished with the red zone period and the favorite is the goal line. We put the ball on the three yard line and it becomes man versus man and allows us to see who can make a play and get into the end zone or who can keep them out.

“It was a very enthusiastic practice and we have to use this as a spring board as we move forward into our first two-a-day tomorrow.”

On the continued evaluation since moving to full pads:

“Right now there is a lot of battling going on. We still have another week of evaluation before we are going to decide our first team, second team and third team, but we continue to evaluate both in live action and reviewing the practice film each afternoon.”

On the offensive and defensive lines since the move to full pads:

“We have had some guys that have stepped up on the offensive line. The guard position has been very impressive with Wilson Heres and Avery White. They have done a great job. Of course our center, Kirby (Southard), he is just as solid as can be. A guy that has really stepped up and come to the fore front here early is Thomas Marchman. He is a true freshman that we have at the right tackle position right now. We are just trying to find the best five that we can play up front though.”

“Defensively, Bret Niederreither, has been very impressive at nose guard, which is our most pivotal position on defense. He’s been working with true freshman Austin Barrett. At defensive end we are playing a lot of guys right now. Hank Avery and Cody Jones are in there with the first group, but we are mixing and matching to find the best players that we can.”
