Mercer uses balanced play to sweep DH from UNF

MACON, Ga. (MERCER RELEASE) – The Mercer baseball team used an offensive explosion in game one and a strong starting pitching performance in game two to sweep a doubleheader from North Florida on Sunday afternoon at Claude Smith Field.

Mercer (22-7, 7-2 A-Sun) started the day with an 11-4 win in game one before holding onto a 6-3 triumph in a seven-inning game two victory.
With today’s doubleheader sweep, Mercer clinched the series win over UNF and kept its streak alive of not losing an Atlantic Sun Conference weekend series at home since March of 2012.

In game one, the Bears were trailing the Ospreys 3-2 before posting a five-run bottom of the sixth inning. A sacrifice fly by freshman Kyle Lewis, an RBI double from senior Nick Backlund and a three-RBI bases clearing double by junior Chesny Young made the score 7-3 Mercer.

Junior Dimitri Kourtis would do the rest from there, putting together his second-straight dominant outing on the mound. Coming on in relief of Bears starter Grant Papelian, the Alpharetta, Ga. native allowed just one run on 3.1 innings pitched to pick up the win.

In game two, Mercer found itself down 2-0 in the bottom of the fourth before a two-RBI single by senior Derrick Workman tied things up at 2-2.

The Bears put together another big inning with a four-run frame in the bottom of the fifth to distance themselves from the Ospreys. An RBI double from senior Sasha LaGarde and a two-run home run to straight-away center field by Backlund highlighted the rally that made the score 6-3 Mercer.

Mercer’s game two starting pitcher Eric Nyquist was very effective on the mound all game long, allowing three runs, only two of which were earned, on seven hits in a career-high seven innings pitched to pick up his first complete game win of his career.

Young finished the day going 4-for-7 with four RBI and three runs scored while Workman also finished 4-for-7 with three RBI in the doubleheader sweep.
Mercer is back in action on April 1 when it travels to Montgomery to take on Alabama State at 5pm at the ASU Baseball Complex.
