Mercer releases 2014 volleyball schedule

A 30-match slate including four non-conference tournaments and 16 Southern Conference contests make up the 2014 Mercer volleyball schedule as announced by head coach Damian Elder on Monday.
MACON, Ga. (MERCER ATHLETICS RELEASE) – A 30-match slate including four non-conference tournaments and 16 Southern Conference contests make up the 2014 Mercer volleyball schedule as announced by head coach Damian Elder on Monday.

Elder’s third season at the helm of Mercer’s indoor program will see his team open the year at non-conference tournaments hosted by the College of Charleston (Aug. 29-30), Troy (Sept. 4-5), Ole Miss (Sept. 12-13) and Tennessee (Sept. 19-20) before making the SoCon debut at The Citadel on September 26.

In Charleston, Mercer will meet the host Cougars, Kent State and Davidson. In Troy, the Bears are scheduled to play the host Trojans, South Carolina State and Jacksonville State. In Oxford, Mercer opens against Ole Miss before squaring off with UAB and Jacksonville State. The final non-conference event of the season sees the Bears take on Tennessee, Memphis and Austin Peay in Knoxville.

“I think we put together a solid non-conference schedule that will help prepare us for our first year of Southern Conference competition,” Elder said. “Playing matches against SEC opponents like Ole Miss and Tennessee provides us an opportunity to evaluate our program against some of the best talent in the country.”

Mercer’s nine-match home schedule begins Sept. 27 against UNC Greensboro at 7 p.m. Of Mercer’s nine home contests, eight are against SoCon foes while the lone non-conference test comes against Savannah State on Oct. 15.

The SoCon schedule dictates a home-and-home series format, with Mercer playing each conference opponent both at home and on the road. The Bears stand to benefit from a favorable end to conference play as the team hosts four of its six final matches.

All nine volleyball playing members of the Southern Conference end will meet for the three-day, single elimination SoCon Tournament at UNC Greensboro on Nov. 22-24.
