Mercer men’s basketball inks Fishler to NLI

Mercer men’s basketball head coach Bob Hoffman took another step in restocking the cupboard for the 2014-15 season on Thursday, announcing the signing of Andrew Fishler to a National Letter of Intent.

MACON, Ga. (MERCER RELEASE) - Mercer men’s basketball head coach Bob Hoffman took another step in restocking the cupboard for the 2014-15 season on Thursday, announcing the signing of Andrew Fishler to a National Letter of Intent.

Fishler is a prized 7-foot-1 recruit out of Gulf Coast Community College in Panama City, Florida, where he earned second team All-Panhandle Conference recognition as both a freshman and sophomore.

Fishler averaged 5.3 points, 4.8 rebounds and 2.6 blocks per game as a sophomore and boasts Gulf Coast CC program records for single game blocks (6), single season blocks (76) and career blocks (146).

Fishler booked double figure point totals four times in 2013-14, including a season-high 13 at USC Salkehatchie on November 8.  He’s set to join the Bears in the fall of 2014 with two seasons of eligibility remaining.

Gulf Coast CC head coach Jay Powell insists Fishler will prove a great fit for the Mercer basketball program.

“Andrew is a fine young man who will flourish under Coach Hoffman,” Powell said.  “He has an incredibly high ceiling, and I believe when he gets to Mercer he will maximize his potential.  He was a tremendous defensive presence for us blocking and altering shots, and a factor on the offensive end with his energy, rebounding, and ability to finish around the rim.  I couldn’t be more excited for Andrew, his family, and Mercer basketball.”

Fishler joins five prospects secured by Hoffman and his staff during November’s early signing period.  Stephon Jelks, Tyre Moore, Jestin Lewis, Niklas Ney, Demetre Rivers and Fishler are set to step in for the 2014-15 season as the program faces the departure of a seven-member 2014 senior class.

Hoffman has a proven track record of success with transfers from Gulf Coast CC, as 2013 Mercer graduate Travis Smith also signed with the Bears after spending time at the school.  Smith was a vital part of the 2012 CollegeInsider.com Tournament Championship and later led Bears in scoring as a senior on his way to second team Atlantic Sun All-Conference honors.
