MACON, Ga. (MERCER ATHLETICS RELEASE) – For the second-straight year, the Mercer men’s basketball team has garnered the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Team Academic Excellence Award, as announced by the association on Wednesday.

The Team Academic Excellence Award recognizes NCAA and NAIA men’s basketball teams that earned a cumulative Grade Point Average of 3.0 or better throughout the 2013-14 academic year. Of the 125 teams to make the list, only 29 were NCAA Division I affiliated programs.

Mercer’s 17-member roster compiled a 3.211 GPA during the 2013-14 academic year, while 13 players posted GPA’s of 3.0 or higher. Earlier this week, Mercer graduates Kevin Canevari and Anthony White Jr. were named to the NABC Honors Court, a distinction reserved for student-athletes who have matriculated at least one year at their institution and earned GPA of 3.2 or higher in the fall and spring semesters.

Mercer joined just eight other teams (Albany, Florida, Gonzaga, Iowa State, Kentucky, North Dakota State, Stanford, Texas) as recipients of the award to win at least one game in the 2014 NCAA Tournament. The Bears capped the 2013-14 season in style with a 27-9 record after downing No. 6 Duke, 78-71 in second round of the NCAA Tournament.

Last season, Mercer garnered recognition in the inaugural year of the award with a 3.001 GPA. The Bears are one of just 32 teams to earn the award in back-to-back years.
