MACON, Ga. (MERCER RELEASE) – After wrapping up the most successful season in program history, the Mercer men’s basketball team earned the No. 4 spot in the final CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Poll of the year.
Mercer ended its year with an overall record of 27-9 and an appearance in the NCAA Tournament Round of 32. The Bears advanced in the Big Dance by virtue of a 78-71 win over then No. 6 ranked Duke in the Midwest Region’s 14-3 matchup.
The Bears’ victory sent shockwaves through the nation and landed the team publicity in virtually every national media outlet. Mercer’s 27-win season equaled a school record for single-season wins and also marked the program’s best winning percentage (.750).
Mercer’s win over Duke marked the program’s first NCAA tournament victory and also solidified the team’s place in history as just the 18th No. 14 seed to knock out a No. 3 seed.
The Bears received 679 points in the poll, trailing only North Dakota State (710), Stephen F. Austin (744) and Wichita State (775). The Mid-Major Poll is made up of teams from the following conferences: America East, Atlantic Sun, Big Sky, Big South, Big West, Colonial, Great West, Horizon, Independents, Ivy, Metro Atlantic, Mid-American, Mid-Eastern, Missouri Valley, Northeast, Ohio Valley, Patriot, Southern, Southland, Southwestern, Summit, Sun Belt, West Coast.
