Mercer football preseason report: August 6

The Mercer University football team returned to the field for the team’s ninth practice of the 2014 preseason camp on Wednesday afternoon.
MACON, Ga. (MERCER ATHLETICS RELEASE) – The Mercer University football team returned to the field for the team’s ninth practice of the 2014 preseason camp on Wednesday afternoon.

After going through a six-day period of installing the offense, things are once again clicking for a unit that has 10 starters returning from one of the highest scoring teams in the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision in 2013.

Several position battles have emerged after the first week of camp though, as a talented group of newcomers has pushed the Bears’ wealth of returning talent for a spot on the team’s two-deep.

“We have a lot of competition at several positions right now,” said head coach Bobby Lamb. “I’ve told them that every rep counts. One rep could cost them a starting spot and if I’m a player, I’m going to give an all-out effort to make sure that doesn’t happen to me.”

Lamb on the offensive line:
“We have had some great competition on the offensive line. Like I said a couple days ago, we are just trying to find the best five. Things are still up in the air for the most part, but right now the two returning starters that have solidified themselves the best are our center Kirby Southard and Wilson Heres, our left guard.”

Lamb on the battle at tight end:
“The tight end position is interesting because we have four guys competing. Last year we played with Robert Brown and Grant Radakovich the entire season. However, we added Derek Owings in the spring and then Sam Walker for camp, so there are four guys that are really competitive and we have to be ready to use them in different situations.”

Lamb on the running backs:
“Payton Usher and JeTarii Donald both return after great seasons and of course Tee Mitchell has looked really go so far. Our big back, Alex Lakes, is also running the ball really well, so we aren’t even close to naming the two-deep. We’ll be evaluating all through next week and there is a lot of work yet to do.”
