Mercer football kicks off 2014 fall camp

The Mercer University football team returned to the field this afternoon, completing its first practice of the 2014 preseason camp.
MACON, Ga. (MERCER ATHLETICS RELEASE) – The Mercer University football team returned to the field this afternoon, completing its first practice of the 2014 preseason camp.

The Bears, who had 95 players report to camp, went through a full day of activities, including morning conditioning drills, orientation, a 4 p.m. practice and position meetings.

Mercer will embark on its second practice of camp on Thursday morning at 8:45 a.m. inside Mercer University Stadium. Just four weeks away from the season opener against Reinhardt, the team’s preseason camp schedule features 17 remaining practices and two scrimmages.

Quotes from head coach Bobby Lamb on Mercer’s first fall practice of 2014:
“I’ve always said that the first day is your most impressive practice, because the young men have fresh legs and they have a sense of excitement. Our level of play was really good today, even though we were in what I call “pajama practice” with helmets only. Now the entire secret of preseason camp is following this practice up with another good one tomorrow.”

“We feel like we have a lot of competition at several positions and the best way to separate those guys is to challenge them. Our schemes are going in and we are going to put our entire offense and defense in place in a grand total of six days. They are going to have to learn how to retain it and play in it at game speed, so we are putting a lot of pressure on them early.”

“I think they are doing a great job so far. The newcomers have been impressive and the guys that were here last year and have experience did a great job in the offseason. We just look so much more athletic out there as a football team.”
