MACON, Ga. (MERCER ATHLETICS RELEASE) – After learning it had been selected to participate in the in the 2014 Preseason WNIT last month, the Mercer women’s basketball team found out it drew Mississippi State in the first round as tournament officials released opening round match-ups on Tuesday afternoon.

Mercer will play at Mississippi State on November 14 at 8 p.m. in Humphrey Coliseum. The Bulldogs return all five starters from a squad that finished 22-14 overall and advanced to the quarterfinals of the Postseason WNIT last season.

“It’s a tremendous honor for us to be selected to play in the Preseason WNIT with all these other great programs that are in this year’s field,” head coach Susie Gardner said. “I think it shows how far our program has come in a short period of time and the amount of respect we have earned nationally. Going down to Mississippi State will obviously be a huge challenge for our program, but it will give all our players and coaches something to prepare for and plan for as we continue to work hard this summer in preparation for next season.”

The Preseason WNIT kicks off the women’s college basketball season and will be played Nov. 14-23. The tournament is formatted to give all teams a three-game guarantee. The event opens Nov. 14-15 with Round One. Round Two will be played Nov. 16-17; Semifinals will be Nov. 20; and the championship is set for Sunday, Nov. 23 at 3 p.m. ET. The championship game will be nationally televised live on CBS Sports Network.

If a team loses in the first two rounds, they will finish the tournament in the consolation bracket. The consolation bracket will be re-drawn to form new matchups based on the geography of teams involved, who can/cannot host, and recent history of teams. The consolation bracket will be released Nov. 16 after all of the Round One games are complete.

The Preseason WNIT is organized and produced by Triple Crown Sports, a national sports event company based in Fort Collins, Colorado. According to the official Preseason WNIT website, teams are selected for the tournament based on their program's expected success, relevant past, conference standings, fan base and geographical location - among other criteria.

Mercer returns three starters and 63 percent of its scoring back from last season’s team that went 17-14 overall and advanced to the semifinal round of the Atlantic Sun Tournament.
