Macon man blasts commission over Freedom Park upgrades

Isaac Lightfoot says the transformation of Freedom Park Recreation Center to a boxing and conditioning facility is a mistake.
MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) - A Macon man scolded commission members Tuesday for allowing the transformation of Freedom Park Rec Center from a basketball facility to a boxing and conditioning facility.

The basketball goals in the building on Roff Avenue are gone now. In a room that used to be used for meeting and playing other games, punching bags hang from the walls.  Isaac Lightfoot, who lives in the area, says the idea was foolish and takes away other opportunities, especially for girls.

"Everybody don't want to be fighters and boxers," he tells us.  "You need to get a central location for the boxing gym.  Don't take the recreation from those kids over there.  They need basketball, they need volleyball, they need games, they need swimming."

Lightfoot blamed the District 5 commissioner, which is Bert Bivins, for allowing the renovation to happen.

Parks and recreation director Doc Dougherty has responded to those who aren't happy about basketball being gone, saying there are plenty of other places to play in town.
We tried speaking with Commissioner Bivins on camera after Tuesday's meeting, but he declined.  He says he will talk the issue over with Lightfoot but was actually surprised himself to learn about the changes at the center.
