Macon-Bibb EMA preps for possible severe storm damage

Macon-Bibb Emergency Management crews prepare for round two of storms.
MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) - Round one of the severe storms may be over, but Emergency Management crews are standing by, hoping to stay on top of any possible threats the weather may bring in the middle Georgia area. Macon-Bibb's EMA director says  his crews have spent countless hours preparing, hoping to keep the public safe.

As morning storms thrashed their way through Macon...

Public works crews trailed right behind it...clearing and cutting up toppled trees in neighborhoods throughout the city.

The biggest on Ingleside Avenue, where this downed tree blocked an entire street.

"We anticipated with some winds, because of how wet it has been this year, that trees will topple," Druitt said.

Macon-Bibb EMA Director, Don Druitt, says keeping his team and public prepared helps.

"The system set up pretty much like they said. We're glad our public has been taking heed with their no alert radios, staying vigilant, staying in tune to the news information that's been put out there about staying safe," Druitt said.

Deadly storms have swept through the southeast, destroying homes, leaving many with nowhere left to go.

Druitt and his team have been monitoring weather projections for the Macon area. They aren't anticipating anything quite as severe, but he says it's important to prepare for everything.

"We'll have the Emergency Operating Center open early this morning with our sheriff, and our fire, and our public works crews and EMA staff and our call takers. So if the public does call in we'll be able to respond quickly to those incidents as they occur," Druitt said.

He wants to make sure the public stays safe, and keeping everyone informed will help him do that.

"Be vigilant, have your no alert radios going, pay attention to the news. We do know this event is still going to go late this evening into early until tomorrow morning. We're all standing by.
