GRAY, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The Otis Redding Memorial Committee announced their plans to build a memorial marker for the legendary soul singer, Otis Redding.

Leaders says the memorial honors Redding’s life, and love for the city of Gray and Jones County.

On Tuesday, dozens gathered at the W.E. Knox Civic Center in Gray to hear from committee leaders, and family members about the upcoming project.

Jones County Market President of Morris Bank and Otis Redding Memorial Committee organizer, Thad Childs said in a news release, “This is a great way to get the official dedication that a legend so rightly deserves, and I’m so happy to see the project finally come to fruition.”

During the announcement, Childs presented a $5,000 check to the foundation members to assist with construction funds for the memorial.

Redding’s daughter Karla Redding-Andrews told 41NBC she wants the community to understand her father was more than a singer. She added Redding was a community supporter, and he was proud to call Jones County home.

According to Redding-Andrews, the memorial marker will be near West Clinton Street.

Construction is underway.

The unveiling date is scheduled for September 6, 2014.
