Intensity Athletics sending more than a dozen to AAU Junior Olympics

14 athletes from Intensity Athletics, an Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) team in Warner Robins, are going to Des Moines, Iowa later this month for the AAU Junior Olympics.
WARNER ROBINS, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) - Intensity Athletics is sending 14 athletes to the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) Junior Olympics later this month in Des Moines, Iowa.

"Our practices are very intense, especially now that we're going into the Junior Olympics countdown week," says 13-year-old Jordan Thomas.  "It's a lot harder than it is usually."

Practice makes perfect, and so does being coached by a man like Hoy Thurman III.

"I used to be on the US Air Force track and field team for the past 15 years," Thurman says. "I was making the team every year.  Then that propelled me to get an opportunity to qualify and train for the US bobsled team, which led me to an alternate position in the 2010 Winter Olympics."

It's no surprise a coach with that kind of resume expects greatness out of his athletes.

"You'll feel like you're running a perfect race," says 13-year-old Eiljah Reynolds. " You just ran your personal best, but he still says there's like five things you can do better."

Thomas agrees.

"To be coached by him is like really great," she says.  "He's very competitive.  He's always making sure you're making your times.  He gives you good rest time.  He encourages you.  He's just a good coach."

The season's finish line is the Junior Olympics. Just like at practice, Thurman has high expectations.

"We're looking to get the relay team in the top 5 in the nation," he says.  "We're looking at getting a lot of athletes in the finals in the 120 meter and lots of success in the long jump."

The team competes in the state games this weekend. Thurman says competing there will give those going to the Junior Olympics a taste of what the competition will be like.  The Junior Olympics begin July 25 in Des Moines, Iowa.
