Houston County School Board approves Mark Scott as new superintendent

By a 5-0 vote, the Houston County School Board approves Mark Scott as the district's new superintendent.
PERRY, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) - There's a new man in charge of Houston County Schools and he says he's ready to keep the momentum going. today the school board officially signed on Dr. Mark Scott as the next superintendent for the school district and he's says he's excited for the opportunity. 

All smiles and all business...

That describes Dr. Mark Scott to a tee. 

He and his family along with dozens of supporters celebrated as he was named the new superintendent for Houston County Schools. 

"It's very humbling to know that people support what you do and they're excited for you and with you, and so I'm excited about this opportunity," Scott said. 

Scott wants to keep the success in Houston County going. He knows a little something about it. He's served as the district's Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources. 

"We've got a lot of great things going on in Houston County and we look to continue the work that's being done. I really want to get out and support and what's going on in our schools and make sure that we are able to be successful," Scott said. 

But it won't always be easy. Scott immediately pointed some challenges he and his staff will prepare for, and he's ready to face them head on. 

"Our teachers have gone through a lot of tough times. They've been asked to do more with less. So giving them the resources they need, giving them the staff they need in the schools and our board is supportive of that," Scott said. 

A good relationship with the school board is another one of Scott's priorities. He believes his good nature, fun spirit, will help him teach....

"I meet no stranger, I think that's a great trait. That's the fun of the job of being in education is being around kids, being around teachers, and being around people," Scott said.

Scott was the sole finalist before the board made their decision. 

His official first day as superintendent will be on June the 1st.  


The Houston County School Board approves its new superintendent in a unanimous vote.

At its meeting Tuesday, the school board voted 5-0 to name Mark Scott, former principal at Northside High School in Warner Robins, as the district's next superintendent.  Scott will replace Robin Hines, who is retiring.

Scott currently serves as assistant superintendent for human resources.
