Heat sends 2 DeKalb firefighters to hospital

Officials say two firefighters were taken to a hospital after suffering from heat exhaustion while battling a house fire in metro Atlanta.

DECATUR, Ga. (AP) — Officials say two firefighters were taken to a hospital after suffering from heat exhaustion while battling a house fire in metro Atlanta.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports (http://on-ajc.com/1j9GldI ) both DeKalb County firefighters were expected to be released after receiving treatment Monday. Fire Capt. Eric Jackson said a third firefighter was also overcome by heat but was treated at the scene.

They were fighting a blaze at a home that was heavily damaged by fire Monday afternoon. Jackson said 90-degree temperatures and the heavy equipment firefighters wear likely contributed to them becoming ill. But he said all three were able to come out of the house on their own before they were taken for treatment.

No other injuries were reported.
