MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) - Macon mayor Robert Reichert and former mayor C. Jack Ellis are heading to a runoff in the race for mayor of the newly consolidated Macon-Bibb County government.
Sam Hart, Bibb County Commission Chairman, finished third in voting. He had 11% of the vote, Ellis got 30% while Reichert got 50%--just one percent short of an outright win.
At first, it appeared Reichert won the election, but then the Macon-Bibb Board of Elections revealed thousands of early and absentee votes hadn't been counted yet. After those were tallied, the board of elections announced there would be a runoff on October 15.
"People have to go to the polls one more time for the runoff," Hart told 41NBC after the announcement. "I'll just be glad when we go forward. Let's go ahead and get this thing done so we can elect our new mayor."
Hart wouldn't say which side he will support.
"I'm going to think about it," he said. "For now, I'm standing to the side and reflecting on my own loss."
The new mayor will take office January 1.
