Gray Mayor encourages local business growth with sticker campaign

Local businesses around Gray love it--Mayor Stephen Tingen created a sticker with a simple message that's making a big impact.
GRAY, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) - Local businesses around Gray love it--Mayor Stephen Tingen created a sticker with a simple message that's making a big impact.

The mayor has started a new sticker campaign.

"Keep It Home, Shop In Jones" aims at helping local businesses.

And he says it's already catching on in the community.

Sometimes, it doesn't take much for an idea to stick.

"Keep it home, shop in Jones, man!" said Old Clinton Gas employee Spencer Ussery.

Keep your money local.

"For me, I'd rather go somewhere local than to go anywhere else," said Chevy's Pizza owner Chevy Turner.

And idea Mayor Tingen thinks these local businesses would love.

"That locally owned sticker, people will know that we're locally owned," said Turner. "And a lot of people like to support locally owned businesses."

"He's done a really really good job," said Gray Feed and Seed owner Chip Persons. "He's just on the ball, the new stickers--shop local, I think really mean something. Keep money in the community--I think it's just a great job that he's done really."

"It shows that the mayor is just a very hometown down, local supporter--he loves Gray, Georgia," said Old Clinton Gas employee Spencer Ussery.

Whether it's Chevy's Pizza, Old Clinton Gas, or Gray Feed and Seed, spending money locally helps Gray.

"This is a family environment and one way to promote that family environment and keep that family environment strong is to support your local businesses."

Tingen could name off quite a few local moneymakers.

"They're locally owned, Chinese restaurant, they're locally owned, Snap 'N Turtle--she lives like 12 miles down the street in Hillsboro, C 'N L Nails is locally owned," said Tingen.

All of which could suffer with less traffic in Gray because of the new bypass being built.

"With the bypass coming, I was thinking, what's a good way to create that draw to get people to come to Gray?" said Tingen.

Simply get the message out.

"So we'll just get a little bumper sticker because the "I Heart Gray" stickers turned out so great, so it just says locally owned, and its the little catch phrase, "Keep It Home, Shop In Jones," said Tingen.
