Girlfriend charged with running over and killing Macon man

Tasha Phillips lied to police about what happened in an attempt to clear her name.
MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) - Bibb County deputies are charging a Macon man's girlfriend after she ran over and killed him.

The incident occurred at the Post Office on Pio Nono Avenue Friday night around 10:30.

Someone screaming for help drew officers to the location.

When they arrived, they found 24-year-old Martegus Jamell Johnson lying unresponsive on the ground.

Johnson was transported to the hospital where doctors pronounced him dead.

Johnson's girlfriend Tasha Yolanda Phillips told deputies she and Johnson had gone to buy drugs at that location.

She said the two black males they were buying the drugs from attacked her.

Johnson stepped in to stop it, but was attacked as well.

Phillips told investigators the two men had run Johnson over with their silver Chevrolet Trailblazer as they left the scene.

However, a different story emerged from witness statements.

Investigators found that the couple had gotten into a fight and Phillips hit Johnson with her black Ford Explorer.

Investigators have issued warrants for felony murder, aggravated assault and tampering with evidence for Phillips.

She will be taken into custody after her stay at the hospital.

If you have information about what happened, called the Bibb County Sheriff's Office at 478-751-7500.
