Georgia Power Scam

Georgia Power receives reports of "scam artists" attempting to defraud customers.
MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) - Georgia Power has been receiving reports of "scam artists" trying to defraud customers by posing as Georgia Power employees.

The imposters have been calling customers in Macon and Middle Georgia over the past few days.

The imposters say they are from the "disconnection department" at Georgia Power and demand immediate payment to avoid disconnection.

The External Affairs Manager of Georgia Power, Theresa Robinson, said the imposters ask customers to provide credit card information over the phone or meet them in person with cash.

Bryan Nichols was one of the people who received a call. He said he immediately knew it was a scam and tried calling the number back.

"They answered the phone to then say if we would pay $700 on a credit card they would stop the guys from coming and pulling the meter," said Nichols.

Georgia Power is now working with law enforcement to track down the imposters.

Robinson said Georgia Power would never ask anyone to provide any kind of checking or credit card information by phone.

She advises customers to not give personal information over the phone. Instead, they should call Georgia Power's 24-hour customer service line at 888-660-5890.
