Former Perry Police Chief Potter dies

Chief George Potter lost his battle with cancer.
PERRY, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) - Former Perry Police Chief George Potter lost his battle with cancer on Wednesday night.

"He was a visionary leader, and a mentoring type leader. He brought the department to a professional level," Captain William Phelps with the Perry Police Department said.

"He believed in a community oriented police department. He was a caring person who loved his community," Phelps said.

Officers say Potter was all about making the citizens feel apart of the police department.

The George A. Potter Public Safety Training Center was dedicated to the chief last fall.

A memorial service for Potter will be held at New Hope Baptist Church on Saturday at 2 p.m. in Perry.
