'Elaborate' marijuana grow house raided in Milledgeville

A Milledgeville couple was arrested after police found more than 200 marijuana plants in their home.
MILLEDGEVILLE, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) - Milledgeville police say it was one of the largest drugs bust they have ever had.

Ocmulgee Drug Task Force found more than 200 marijuana plants growing in a Baldwin County home.

Police believe the owners of the home, Mitchell and Michelle Owens, were using drug money to run their tattoo shop.

The house was discovered in a quiet and well landscaped home.

Thursday, five Ocmulgee Drug Task Force agents, six Milledgeville Police investigators and four Baldwin County Sheriff's Office investigators raided the home.

Mitchell Owens and his wife Michelle Owens were arrested and charged with manufacturing marijuana.

"I was very surprised, said Milledgeville Police Major Reginald Hill. “We don't really have many things that go on in that neighborhood. So this was pretty big for that area."

Police found more than 200 marijuana plants, $3,000 in cash, drug paraphernalia and multiple documents when they raided the Tomlinson Road residence.

It was the documents they found that led police to raid a tattoo shop they owned said Wesley Nunn, who is the Commander of the Ocmulgee Drug Task Force.

"Anytime we have co-mingling of funds from drugs anything is asset forfeiture related after interviewing and the paper work we've looked at, they were supporting their operation here at Bluz tattoos, by using the money they were making on the marijuana operation," said Nunn.

The task force commander says the Owens had a complicated marijuana indoor growth operation.

"I've seen many many of these throughout the state and this is one of the elaborate ones that I've seen,” said Nunn. “Not only the garage had marijuana plants live growing in it. But, he had a separate room where he called his 'baby room,' where they would grow up and he put them in a larger room."

James Roberson owns the plaza where the Owens' tattoo shop is located.

He says he had no idea what the Owens were up to.

"It's quite disturbing to find out this has happened in our area," said Roberson. "It's not good for our community."
