Cornelius, NC (SportsNetwork.com) - What a day it was for Clint Bowyer on Monday.
Early in the day, Bowyer announced on Twitter that he and his wife, Lorra, are expecting a baby boy. The couple got married in the Bahamas two weeks ago. It was an off-week for the Sprint Cup Series.
Then later, Michael Waltrip Racing revealed that Bowyer as well as crew chief Brian Pattie and sponsor 5-Hour Energy have signed multiyear contracts with the team in Sprint Cup, starting in 2015. Bowyer drives the No. 15 Toyota for MWR.
"This is big news for all of us," Bowyer said in a team statement. "It creates great stability and excitement about what the next few years can bring. MWR is my racing home, and continuing this relationship with 5-hour Energy was a high priority. It's time to put the paperwork in a drawer and focus on winning."
Bowyer, 34, is from Emporia, Kan. Sprint Cup is competing at his home track, Kansas Speedway, this coming weekend. He is expected to make his 300th career start in the series there.
Bowyer and Pattie have been with MWR since the start of the 2012 season. They have scored three race wins and qualified for the championship Chase the past two years. Bowyer finished runner-up to champion Brad Keselowski in '12.
"Since the first day 5-hour Energy, Clint and Brian showed up at MWR, we have been a contender for wins and championships," team co-owner Michael Waltrip said. "I am so thankful that we get to continue and add to what we have built. I am most happy for the employees of MWR who are the foundation of everything we do."
5-Hour Energy will serve as primary sponsor for Bowyer's No. 15 team in 24 races next season and in the following years. Peak and AAA Mid-Atlantic will sponsor the team as well.
Bowyer has not won a Sprint Cup race since October 2012 at Charlotte Motor Speedway. He is currently 18th in the point standings. His best finish this season is third, which came this past Sunday at Talladega Superspeedway.
