Big inning lifts Mercer to 12-4 win at Alabama State

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (MERCER RELEASE)– The Mercer baseball team sent 15 men to the plate in a jailbreak top of the seventh inning to pull away from Alabama State for a 12-4 road win on Tuesday evening at the Wheeler-Watkins Baseball Complex.

The nine-run inning for Mercer (23-7) was its highest single-inning run total since plating 10 runs in the bottom of the sixth in an 18-3 home win over Florida A&M in February of 2013.

Junior Chesny Young paced the Bears offense that featured six players who recorded multi-hit games by going 3-for-5 with a run scored and four RBI in the win.

Mercer jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning against Alabama State starter Normando Valentin courtesy of an RBI single by Young.

The Bears lead would be short lived, however, as an RBI triple by Cesar Rivera and a sacrifice fly by Richard Gonzalez pushed Alabama State out to a 2-1 lead through the first inning of play.

Mercer responded next time up though after a leadoff double by freshman Charlie Madden was followed up by an RBI groundout by classmate Nathaniel Lowe to tie things up at 2-2.

The back-and-forth affair continued in the bottom of the third as a solo home run by Gonzalez and an RBI single up the middle by Branden Castro pushed Alabama State back in front, 4-2.
