Bibb officials working to fix landfill issues

Officials say fixing the landfill problems are a work in progress, but they're positive they'll get fixed.
MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) - Macon-Bibb officials are responding, after finding out they were hit with a $70,000 fine for landfill violations.

The Environmental Protection Division handed out the fine after the landfill failed an inspection for a second time back in January for problems like lack of erosion control and litter throughout the facility.

Steve Layson, the assistant county manager, has been monitoring the efforts to get the problems fixed and he says they're on the right track.

"The grassing of the landfill, the slopes in the upper part of the landfill. We're working hard on that. Our drainage, we've already fixed the drainage on the upper slopes, we've got that done. We've got a lot of ditching to do and erosion control," Layson said.

The county has 30 days to pay the fine.

Layson says there will be a new director of solid waste over the landfill in the coming weeks, who will continue the case until the issues are fixed.
